How this tool helps
Each draw returns one city from 130 bundled records, with its localized city and country name, coordinates, a map, and any exact-locale details available for that row. Bombay duplicates Mumbai at the same coordinates and is excluded, leaving 129 distinct selectable places.

Useful for
Geography practice
Filter by continent or country, then locate the result and compare the local display name.
Writing and travel prompts
Use one place as a starting point, then verify current travel facts with an official source.
Interface testing
Exercise accents and non-Latin city names without silently substituting English.
What is different here?
Locale-native filtering
The prefix filter matches the city name shown on screen, including Japanese, Traditional Chinese, and Korean characters.
Fail-closed localization
A non-English route only draws cities with an explicit name in that locale; missing prose is omitted.
Recoverable maps
Map failure never blocks the result. A timeout shows a retry action while the city data remains visible.
Example workflows
Classroom prompt
Choose a continent, draw one city, then ask for its country and approximate location.
Asia + T can return Tokyo, Japan.
Story setting
Draw a city and use the map as orientation, not as a claim that the editorial notes are current.
A draw of Tokyo can seed transit and urban-planning research.
Unicode QA
Try visible prefixes and copy the localized city-country pair into a form.
Use T or P to test the current English display names.
How to use it
- 1.
Choose a geographic filter
Filter by continent or by country, or leave the pool global.
- 2.
Enter an optional visible prefix
Use the first character of the localized name shown in the current interface.
- 3.
Generate and verify
Copy the result; use the map retry if needed and verify changing facts before consequential use.
City generator FAQ
How many cities are selectable?
The bundled file has 130 rows. Bombay duplicates Mumbai and is excluded, so every supported locale currently exposes 129 distinct places. Future rows without an exact-locale name will fail closed.
Why did an English city disappear after switching language?
RandomHub does not silently fall back to English. A city without an explicit localized display name is unavailable in that locale.
Does the prefix use English spelling?
No. It uses the visible localized name and locale-aware character comparison.
Are the map and details live data?
The OpenStreetMap tiles are remote. The bundled coordinates and editorial details are a static snapshot, not live travel or population data.
What happens if the map fails?
After nine seconds the map area shows an error and retry button; the generated city remains usable.
Dataset boundary
City identity labels were projected from a pinned Wikidata-derived snapshot and locale modules. Country, currency, and language labels use the browser’s CLDR-backed Intl APIs where possible. Coordinates and editorial fields come from the bundled RandomHub dataset and should be treated as a dated reference, not an authority.
